National Guard To The Border To Do...Not Much.

So I hear that the President is going to do a prime-time address tonight focusing on moving the National Guard to the border. If this is what I expect it to be, which is a purely political move designed to boost his poll numbers and to shut the public up, then I'm already angry.

I suppose this is a post where I push back the Kool-Aid, 'cause it's just too bitter to stomach.

President Bush is set to deploy National Guard troops to the border numbering less than 10,000, but will not allow them to apprehend illegals attempting to violate our sovereignty. Instead, they are there to "augment" the Border Patrol, and aid in surveillance.

What good is deploying the Army if they aren't there to secure to do anything? What a waste of those soldiers' time! If these men and women are to be called upon, then we ought to call upon them only if we intend to use them properly. It isn't their job to sit back and watch illegals strolling across the line into America. Some senators and critics are saying that the military is stretched too thin, and that this isn't their job. I agree, but not for the reasons they give; securing the borders can certainly be the military's job, but this is not what they are there to do. This really isn't their job! Their job should be to stop illegals!

And what's more, what a slap in the face this is to every man and woman who voted for President Bush! I feel insulted! This is nothing more than a pathetic response to poll numbers, a sorry attempt at political positioning for the November Senatorial elections, and a blatant attempt to pacify the public into silence on the outrage felt towards illegal immigration!

I really hope that President Bush proves me wrong tonight, but I don't think he will.

It seems that even before the MSM picked up the story, Bush was on the phone with Vicente Fox, pandering and assuring him that the military will not be "militarized," and telling him that he is "committed to comprehensive immigration reform," according to White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri.

How dare Fox pressure us to help the illegals already here, numbering around 11 million, or object to us moving our own military to our own border? I tell you what, were I the president, and Fox called me, there would've been NO reassuring! It would've gone a little more like this:

"Yeah, Vicente...Shut the pie hole. I'm militarizing the border, and if you don't like it that's too bad. Oh, yeah...You may want to tell your folks to stop trying to cross, 'cause after that little 'Aztlan Rising' demonstration, I'm treating anyone else caught at our border as part of an invasion force, and they will be shot on sight."

Of course, Republicans were all over this on the news talk show circuit yesterday.

"This is not about militarizing the border," national security adviser Stephen J. Hadley said on CBS's "Face the Nation." "The president is looking to do everything he can to secure the border. It's what the American people want, it's what he wants to do."

The plan won support from several powerful Republicans. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) dismissed the "whining and moaning" of critics and said the National Guard was the only option in the short term.

"We've got to secure our borders," Frist said on CNN's "Late Edition." "We hear from the American people. We've got millions of people coming across that border. First and foremost, secure the border, whatever it takes. Everything else we've done has failed, we've got to face that."

Somebody please correct me if I'm missing the point here. Have I missed it? 'augmentation' mission isn't going to secure the borders, and what about the illegals who are already here? News commenters are predicting that the speech will also be a promotion for the President's "guest worker" amnesty bill, which would provide a way for "undocumented" immigrants to stay here legally if they pay back taxes and penalties.

Who out there really thinks that illegals are going to start paying taxes, back taxes and penalties? Anyone? What about the ones who won't? Will we be deporting them? I doubt it!

Besides, would a truckload full of illegals really stand a chance if our military was allowed to do what it does best?
