Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all my blogging friends!
May it be the best one yet!

For a few laughs, here is a little weird news from 2007, courtesy of al-Reuters:

BERLIN (Reuters) - From a Greek nunnery turned into a marijuana farm by two men posing as gardeners to a South African man with a gunshot wound told by a doctor to "walk the pain off," the world was full of weird news in 2007.
A Moscow woman set fire to her ex-husband's penis as he sat naked watching television and drinking vodka. The couple divorced three years ago but continued to share a small flat.

"I was burning like a torch," the wounded ex-husband told Tvoi Den newspaper. "I don't know what I did to deserve this."

In another unusual living arrangement, a German man left his dead mother seated in her favorite armchair at their shared home for two years after her death of natural causes at age 92.

Yet not everything that smelled like a corpse was really dead in 2007. In the German town of Kaiserslautern, police broke into a darkened flat expecting to find a corpse after neighbors complained of a nasty smell seeping out into the hallway.

But instead they found a tenant with very smelly feet asleep in bed next to a pile of extremely foul-smelling laundry.

There were sadly many deaths in 2007 that were hardly noticed, such as in Zagreb, where a Croatian man who boarded a night tram and died in his seat rode through the city for more than six hours before the driver discovered he was dead.

CORGI MEAT BALLS?

Unusual diets made headlines in 2007 -- such as: "No more crispy duck at Beijing toilets." Food stalls attached to Beijing's public toilets were banned ahead of the Olympics after complaints over toilets with poor sanitation.

Also in China, 66-year-old Jiang Musheng said 40 years of swallowing live tree frogs and rats helped him avoid intestinal pain and made him strong.

British artist Mark McGowan ate a meal of meatballs made from a dead corgi dog in a protest against animal cruelty. He said the corgi, which died from natural causes, tasted terrible.

Criminals filled odd news headlines around the world. In the United States, two Colorado men were accused of plotting to kill a man with rattlesnakes in a dispute over a $60,000 poker debt.

"It's a story out of the Wild West -- there's poker, rattlesnakes and unsavory characters," said Lance Clem, of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. "You've got a bunch of snakes becoming involved with a bunch of snakes."

In Sarajevo, two armed men disguised as Muslim women in burqas held up a bank and escaped with $40,000.

A Zimbabwe man stole a bus because he needed transport to get his driving license.

A German bus driver threw a 20-year-old off because he said she was too sexy for his bus. "He opened the door and shouted 'Your cleavage is distracting me every time I look into my mirror and I can't concentrate on the traffic'," the woman said.

In La Paz, the winner of a Bolivian beauty contest was stripped of her title moments after her coronation when judges noticed she was wearing false hair plaits.

Climate change found its way into weird news. A Hummer owner in Russia's St. Petersburg gave activists the green light to pelt his oversized vehicle with rotten eggs and tomatoes.

A 60-year-old German man stunned lawyers during his appeal hearing on a flashing conviction by stripping off in court.

Every story needs a happy ending and Bangkok delivered for this one. A 76-year-old Malay Muslim woman from southern Thailand got on the wrong bus 25 years ago and got lost, ending up living as a beggar at the other end of the country.

But in 2007 she was finally reunited with her family.

Kwanzaa: A Racist Fabrication

Preface: I have posted this for the last two years, and will continue to do so for as long as I blog. (Unless I change my mind. Heehee.) Some may accuse me of racism, or hatemongering, but I don't care: Kwanzaa is a fraud, and I'm not going to let it slide in the interest of being P.C. or 'inclusive.'

Kwanzaa, the completely made-up "black alternative" to Christmas, does nothing but serve to humiliate African-Americans. This 'holiday' was fabricated in 1966 by Ron N. Everett. Mr. Everett subsequently changed his name to Maulana Karenga, and was a notoriously violent black nationalist throughout the sixties. Karenga was sent to prison in 1971 for torturing two women with a soldering iron and a vise, and other implements. After serving time as a violent convicted felon, he was installed as chairman of black studies at California State University at Long Beach and works there to this day.

Kwanzaa is a seven day celebration taking place from December 26th to January 1st. It incorporates elements from several different holidays, such as a Hanukkah type candle holder, and gift giving associated with secular Christmas. It also incorporates harvest celebrations dating back to ancient Egypt, using corn for symbolism. This is despite the fact that no other culture anywhere on Earth or through history has ever celebrated harvest during winter solstice.

Kwanzaa also uses terminology from the language of Swahili, stating that it is a Pan-African language. This is despite the fact that Swahili accounts for only 7% of Africa's language and that most African-Americans would have been forcibly removed from west Africa, not East Africa where Swahili is spoken. Stating that ANY custom is Pan-African is also a fallacy, as Africa to this day remains tribal and local government are typically brutal military dictatorships bent on genocide, such as what happened between the Hutu's and the Tutsi es in Rwanda.

Further promoting black racism, Karenga also authored the Black Pledge of Allegiance. It is as follows:

"We pledge allegiance to the red, black, and green, our flag, the symbol of our eternal struggle, and to the land we must obtain; one nation of black people, with one G-d of us all, totally united in the struggle, for black love, black freedom, and black self-determination."

That's one of THE MOST racist things I have ever heard. We are ONE nation under God here in America, regardless of our creed or race.

In a poor attempt at Marxism, Karenga has humiliated the African-Americans whom he has bamboozled into celebrating this farce. Anyone who will make the effort to read history can see it, and those who don't, or choose to ignore it, are made the fools and rightly so.

Time's "Person of the Year"

By now, I'm sure that most folks have heard that Time Magazine's Person of the Year is Vladamir Putin.

The leftist rag is in question seems enamored of leftists and communists, with the runners-up this year being, in this order:

"RUNNER-UP

Al Gore

Nobel laureate, minding the environment"

Green being the unrequited love of the left, of course.

"RUNNER-UP

J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter creator, finally telling secrets"

...Because it takes a lot of courage to make a fictional character "come out of the closet" for no apparent reason. Gay agenda? Check.

"RUNNER-UP

Hu Jintao

China's leader depends on both ancient wisdom and communist doctrine as guides to action"

Maaaaan, Time sure is in love with Communism. No surprise, considering the leftists are exactly that: Reds in Green clothing.

And last but not least:

"RUNNER-UP

David Petraeus

The commanding general in Iraq fought America's most difficult foreign war — and one at home"

Oh. Well, I guess conservatives don't have any reason to complain, seeing that someone with infinitely more honor than any of the aforementioned made the last runner-up under commies and fiction authors. Yeah.

And what, you may ask, was Time's reason for picking Putin? (Emphasis mine.)

He stands, above all, for stability—stability before freedom, stability before choice, stability in a country that has hardly seen it for a hundred years. Whether he becomes more like the man for whom his grandfather prepared blinis—who himself was twice TIME's Person of the Year—or like Peter the Great, the historical figure he most admires; whether he proves to be a reformer or an autocrat who takes Russia back to an era of repression—this we will know only over the next decade. At significant cost to the principles and ideas that free nations prize, he has performed an extraordinary feat of leadership in imposing stability on a nation that has rarely known it and brought Russia back to the table of world power. For that reason, Vladimir Putin is TIME's 2007 Person of the Year.

As Mitt Romney said on the Glenn Beck show yesterday, it seems any good dictator is eligible.

Romney hadn't heard the news before the interview and was "disgusted". Here's the transcript:

GLENN: Give me your thought on Petraeus not being Time magazine's man of the year but instead Vladimir Putin.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Oh, you are kidding. Did they put Vladimir Putin on the cover?

GLENN: Yeah, Time magazine.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: That really, that's disgusting. I'm absolutely -- I mean, are you -- I mean, I haven't seen Time. Are you serious?

GLENN: No, I'm serious. It is Vladimir Putin, Time magazine man of the year. A guy who, you know, with all of the KGB stuff in the past, Time magazine says has transformed the country and congratulations. Time magazine man of the year, Vladimir Putin.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Well, you know, he imprisoned his political opponents. There have been a number of highly suspicious murders. He has squelched public dissent and free press. And to suggest that someone like that is the man of the year is really disgusting. I'm just appalled. Clearly General Petraeus is the person or one of a few people who would certainly merit that designation and I know Time magazine makes a distinction. They say, well, people who had an impact, whether it's good or bad, is the man of the year. I think that's a --

GLENN: No, no, hang on.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: -- a false --

GLENN: Before you go too far down this road -- wait a minute. Before you go down this road, this is the quote why he's the man of the year, "For bringing stability and renewed... what was it, impact? Status. Renewed status to his country. That's why.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Isn't that something. So a good dictator -- I guess Raul Castro will get it next. A good dictator that imprisons or murders political and media opponents and therefore brings stability, I mean, there's nothing like the stability that martial law provides or dictatorship provides. I find it a truly appalling designation.

GLENN: And the stability that he's bringing to the Middle East with the transfer of this last few days of nuclear technology to Iran.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Yeah. I mean, he's once again supplying nuclear material to the Bushehr power plant and it's another example of Russia trying to destabilize the world, destabilize the Middle East. It does tell you something about Time magazine. I'm really -- I must admit I'm really disappointed. That's a real shock.

GLENN: I was --

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Our mainstream media I think has just showed its hand.

Respectfully, Governor, the MSM has been doing just that for quite some time. They just haven't any shame any longer.

Religious Persecution?

This story goes under so many rights violations, I don't know where to start! Is it religious persecution? Violation of the right to peaceably assemble?

Salisbury issues fine to church
Neighbors complain home beside Bethany Lutheran has been used for gatherings

SALISBURY -- A home beside Bethany Lutheran Church once welcoming camaraderie, the sharing of religious faith and discussion of scriptures is now silent.

The city of Salisbury issued a $1,000 zoning fine to Bethany Lutheran Church last week for using their $135,000 house for Bible study and other organized gatherings.

The Rev. Kevin Wackett received a letter from the city on Dec. 3 with two citations issued Nov. 17 and 24 for unauthorized use of a facility. After purchasing the home in 2002, Wackett said the church applied for a special exemption to use the home for religious purposes and was granted approval by the city, Wicomico County and the state of Maryland.

However, Bill Holland, director of the Department of Building, Permits and Inspections claims the church didn't complete the approval process, which would have included public meetings to discuss the congregation's use of the property.

"The church never received approval from the Board of Zoning Appeals to use the home for anything more than a single-family dwelling," Holland said.

About eight months prior to the fine, the church also received two complaints from Holland's department while the Beacon of Light congregation was using Bethany Lutheran's church facilities.

"They needed space and we told them to use our sanctuary and the house for Bible study," Wackett said.

The complaints issued were regarding "parking on Monticello Avenue and people carrying food into the house," he said.

"We solved that problem by having them park in the church parking lot," Wackett said.

Holland said the department has received numerous complaints from residents in the last couple of months.

"I assume they're coming from the surrounding area, but a lot of the complaints are anonymous," he said.

Holland said he placed calls to the church warning them of upcoming citations and gave them 30 days to cease activities.

"They have to pay the fine, go to court or get the special exemption," he said.

The church has stopped using the facility and has contacted an attorney. An appeal is possible under a federal law protecting churches from zoning ordinances.

"All of the sudden, we get this -- we feel kind of stabbed in the back," Wackett said. "But there's already so much hate in this world and we need to keep loving. It really won't do anyone any good to fight."

The Lutheran congregation doesn't want to fight, thus making themselves an easy mark. Imagine if the neighborhood Islamic mosque were so beset upon. The ACLU and CAIR lawyers would be crawling all over the place and screaming about rights violations!

These people aren't doing anything illegal. They are quiet, and have given their neighbors every consideration as far as parking, ect.

I'm forced to wonder if the parishioners and their threatening covered dishes would be under such scrutiny if they were convening to watch a football game?

A Short Ad

Remember, the Earth only likes the pollution you pay for! Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore says so!

Huh. Guns DO Stop Crime.

Thank God that someone was armed and put this mad dog down:

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- "It seemed like it was me, the gunman, and God," said Jeanne Assam, describing her feelings as she confronted a man who charged into her Colorado Springs church Sunday firing a weapon.

Assam, a church security guard with law enforcement experience, fired her own weapon at the invader and stopped his attack, police say.

Police on Monday identified the gunman as Matthew Murray and said he was also responsible for an attack earlier Sunday at a missionary center some 80 miles away.

The two incidents left four people dead, in addition to the gunman, and five wounded.

----------------------------------

"He simply showed up on our property yesterday with a gun, with the intention of hurting people, and he did," Boyd said.

Boyd said the megachurch instituted security precautions after the shootings at the Denver area mission center.

Boyd said Assam was a hero in preventing further bloodshed, rushing to confront the gunman just inside the church. "She probably saved over a hundred lives," Boyd said.

"I give the credit to God. And I say that very humbly. God was with me and the whole time I was behind cover -- this has got to be God, because of the firepower that [the gunman] had vs. what I had," Assam said.

"I did not run away and I didn't think for a minute to run away, I just knew that I was given the assignment to end this before it got too much worse. I just prayed for the Holy Spirit to guide me."

She told reporters she had not slept since the shooting, "as I'm sure you can tell."

She said she was on the third day of a three-day regimen of fasting and prayer, wanting to know God's will for what to do with her life, when the shooting took place.

Where there are gun-free zones, there are massacres, as we saw earlier in the week with the deadly mall shootings in Omaha. Evil people know they can go on a killing spree totally unchallenged.

If one person at that mall had been armed, so many people may not have died.

Where responsible people are armed, as is their God-given Constitutional Right, we are able to protect ourselves and the lives of our families. This heroine saved many lives, as her pastor pointed out.

Baby Taxation...

...Or more plainly put, global socialism.
From this source, all emphasis mine:

A WEST Australian medical expert wants families to pay a $5000-plus "baby levy" at birth and an annual carbon tax of up to $800 a child.

Wow. I guess only the rich will be allowed to have babies from now on. That's one way to get rid of your poor.

Writing in today's Medical Journal of Australia, Associate Professor Barry Walters said every couple with more than two children should be taxed to pay for enough trees to offset the carbon emissions generated over each child's lifetime.

No word on how many trees that would be, huh?

Professor Walters, clinical associate professor of obstetric medicine at the University of Western Australia and the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth, called for condoms and "greenhouse-friendly" services such as sterilisation procedures to earn carbon credits.

Gee, sounds a bit like this post. I wonder how many 'carbon credits' sterilization will get you... If you make a surplus, I suppose you could resell them or go hog wild with your 'emissions'... After all, the Earth only likes the pollution we pay for.

And never mind the fact that a 'carbon credit' is a made-up, intangible, B.S. thing.

And he implied the Federal Government should ditch the $4133 baby bonus and consider population controls like those in China and India.

Ah, yes. China, the very pinnacle of human rights. What happened to government staying out of a ladies' uterus? *snerk*

Professor Walters said the average annual carbon dioxide emission by an Australian individual was about 17 metric tons, including energy use.

"Every newborn baby in Australia represents a potent source of greenhouse gas emissions for an average of 80 years, not simply by breathing but by the profligate consumption of resources typical of our society," he wrote.

"Far from showering financial booty on new mothers and rewarding greenhouse-unfriendly behaviour, a 'baby levy' in the form of a carbon tax should apply, in line with the 'polluter pays' principle."

So does this taxation end at age 18, or do we take over our own payments as adults? Talk about paying for the sins of the father... And as our technology improves, do we get  a reduced rate? A refund? Or must we still pay this tax on the very air we breathe?

Australian Family Association spokeswoman Angela Conway said it was ridiculous to blame babies for global warming.

"I think self-important professors with silly ideas should have to pay carbon tax for all the hot air they create," she said. "There's masses of evidence to say that child-rich families have much lower resource consumption per head than other styles of households.

Amen, sister! Just for giggles, I calculated our own family of five's 'carbon footprint', and it is literally tons less than the average family of four.

Go figure. Anyone want to buy my extra tonnage?

But the plan won praise from high-profile doctor Garry Egger. "One must wonder why population control is spoken of today only in whispers," he wrote in an MJA response article.

Um... Because it is fascist and inherently evil?

Moron.

Tell me the global warming crowd aren't commies in green clothing!

Green Hanukkah?!?

First and foremost, Happy Hanukkah to all of my Jewish friends!
That being said, did you know that you should go easy on the Menorah this year? It's for the environment, of course.

In a campaign that has spread like wildfire across the Internet, a group of Israeli environmentalists is encouraging Jews around the world to light at least one less candle this Hanukka to help the environment.

The founders of the Green Hanukkia campaign found that every candle that burns completely produces 15 grams of carbon dioxide. If an estimated one million Israeli households light for eight days, they said, it would do significant damage to the atmosphere.

"The campaign calls for Jews around the world to save the last candle and save the planet, so we won't need another miracle," said Liad Ortar, the campaign's cofounder, who runs the Arkada environmental consulting firm and the Ynet Web site's environmental forum. "Global warming is a milestone in human evolution that requires us to rethink how we live our lives, and one of the main paradigms of that is religion and how it fits into the current situation."

----------------------------------------------------------------------

"We have many environmental traditions in Judaism like Tu Bishvat and Succot, but there are also traditions like Lag Ba'omer and Hanukka that made sense when they were instituted but are more problematic now in the days of global warming," Wegner said.

"There are many people who just light candles for the tradition and for their children," he said. "To tell a child on the eighth day that we are not lighting the last candle as a sacrifice for the environment is an act that is not only educational but also will prevent the release of a huge amount of carbon dioxide that would hurt the environment."

Shas MK Nissim Ze'ev said he was not convinced by the environmentalists' argument. He warned that the campaign would take away from the light of Torah that each and every candle symbolizes.

"The environmentalists should think about how much pollution is caused by one solitary diesel truck on the road," Ze'ev said. "They should be fighting the trucks instead of Judaism. This is so trivial, so anti-Jewish and so anti-religious that even the worst anti-Semites couldn't think of it. Just like the Helenists, they are trying to extinguish the flames of the Jewish soul."

United Torah Judaism MK Avraham Ravitz called the environmentalists "crazy people who are playing with the minds of innocent Jewish people." He said the campaign would only convince people who do not light candles anyway.

"They should encourage people to light one less cigarette instead," Ravitz said.

Respectfully, Rabbi, don't harsh on the smokers! The government is already doing a bang-up job of that!

This is just atrocious! What is next? Where does this global warming lunacy end?

I tell you what, Gorites, I think the lack of six million Jews, (and their descendants that never got to exist) being exterminated by Hitler should make up for that one little candle... Think of all the carbon that the Reich saved the Earth by putting all of those innocents to death.

Unless, of course, you're counting the emissions of the ovens against the Jewish people?

Environmentalists Pro Marriage?

That's right... Forget the harm to the family that divorce does, people should stay together because divorce harms the environment.

Divorce leaves more than a trail of legal documents, stinging egos and uprooted kids. The split-ups wreak havoc on the environment.

A global trend of soaring divorce rates has led to a surge in the number of households with fewer people. The result: We collectively devour more space and gobble up more energy and water, say the authors of a new study published online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Not only the United States, but also other countries, including developing countries such as China and places with strict religious policies regarding divorce, are having more divorced households," said co-author Jianguo Liu of Michigan State University. "The consequent increases in consumption of water and energy and using more space are being seen everywhere."

The study gives the down and dirty truths on exactly how much of Mother Nature's resources go down the tubes when unions are severed. But the remedy for such "squander" is made for TV: Fall back in love, or at least cohabitate.

Read the rest here.

That's right... Don't stay married because it's the right thing to do, either for yourselves or for your children. Do it to reduce your 'carbon footprint.'

Egads, folks, where does this insanity end?

Mr. Edward Behr Said:

I read this comment discussing the English teacher and the Teddy Bear jihad over at Posts From Helm's Deep, and just couldn't help but reproduce it here.
Mr Edward Behr said...

This insult cannot be forgiven. The woman must be publicly shot or beheaded as an example to others.

I am the secretary of the International Union of Teddy Bears, Fluffy Bunnies, Cuddly Toys and allied operatives.

As you may be aware, our union has millions of members throughout the world and representatives in every child's bedroom.

A major part of our duties consists of sleeping with children in an entirely innocent and comforting manner. For over a century parents have had absolute trust that they could put us to bed with their sons and daughters and they would not be harmed.

Imagine therefore our horror when we found that this 'teacher' had so corrupted her students as to associate one of our members with history's most notorious pedophile.

Off with her head!!!!

Iran: Use of the word women 'banned from state TV'

Tehran, 29 Nov. (AKI) - The word 'women' must now be replaced on Iranian state television by 'family', reformist Norouz news agency reports.

In programmes broadcast throughout the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women last Sunday, Iranian state TV used the world family instead.

In recent weeks, Iran's Centre for the Participation of Women changed its name to the Centre for Family Matters.

At the time of former reformist president, Mohammad Khatami, the centre was set up within the president's office.

Khatami was president of Iran from 1997 to 2005.

Just ignore them and they don't exsist...

The Global Warming Racket

Global warming is the greatest racket of our times, brought to you by an organization that has a successful history of scams and extortion. Just take the AIDS relief and "oil for food" gyps. Whats worse is that the current scam is far more insidious, as it brings us into global socialism. (re: communism)

Excerpted from this source:

(All emphasis mine.)

UNITED NATIONS -- Helping the world's poor adapt to more floods, droughts and other changes from a warming planet will cost the richest nations at least $86 billion a year by 2015, an expert panel warned Tuesday.

"They must have help from the rich world," said Claes Johnasson, a co-author of the report commissioned by the U.N. Development Program. "Climate is forcing people into human development traps."

(Re-distribution of wealth? Why, that sounds like communism on a global scale!

We can all be poor now. Unless, of course, you work for the U.N.)

Half the cost, $44 billion, would go for "climate-proofing" (What the hell does that mean, exactly?) developing nations' infrastructure while $40 billion would help the poor adapt how the live to cope with climate-related risks, says the panel's report. The other $2 billion would go to strengthening responses to natural disasters.

(Uh-huh. And all that oil money the UN collected went only into buying food for the hungry, and not to buy fancy cars for Koffee Anon's kids. I'm sure that this time every thing will be above board.)

The report recommends the biggest share be paid by the United States and other rich nations, (Naturally.) based on aid targets and financing calculations by the World Bank and Group of Eight major industrialized nations.

The Bush administration said in a statement that one of its top priorities is "to alleviate poverty and spur economic growth in the developing world by modernizing energy services."

The Human Development Report each year compares nations by life expectancy, literacy and other data. This year, it focuses on climate change, coming just a week before the world's nations convene in Indonesia to negotiate a new climate treaty.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Because of global warming, he said, 600 million more people in sub-Saharan Africa will go hungry from collapsing agriculture, an extra 400 million people will be exposed to malaria and other diseases, and an added 200 million will be flooded out of their homes.

(Oh, it's the fault of global warming, and not the fault of their constant warfare, and utter governmental corruption that results in the failure to build infrastructure.

If we just cool the Earth by 1.3 degrees, everything in Africa will be sunshine and lollipops.)

The development panel says the greatest financial responsibility lies with the U.S. and other rich nations most responsible for the accumulating carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere, mainly from man's burning of coal, oil and other fossil fuels.

(Funny how the greatest financial burden always rests with a few of the richest nations, huh? We need to stop letting ourselves be swindled by the U.N.)

"We're suggesting 1.6 percent of (global) GDP _ still very affordable," Kjorven said. "The countries of the world that are the principal culprits, if you wish, for creating this problem in the first place need to act strongly to safeguard the future of those that have done nothing to cause this problem but are the most vulnerable."

(Oh, we're getting a bargain!)

Developed countries, meanwhile, are failing to meet their targets under the current climate treaty, the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, for cutting greenhouse gases by 2012, the report said. France, Germany, Japan and Britain have reduced their emissions somewhat, it said, but the European Union is falling short of its goal of a 20 percent cut by 2020.

(So China is reducing their emissions, too, right? Uh-huh.

This is such an utter scam. We should boot the UN off of our soil and stop funding these mobsters!)

Not the Sharpest Knife in the Drawer:

This photo, supplied by the Aiken County,S.C., County Sheriff's Office, shows a fake $1 million bill, which a man tried to use to open an account in a Aiken, S.C, bank Monday, Nov. 26, 2007. Alexander D. Smith, 31, was charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of forgery after he walked into the bank and tried to open an account by depositing thefake $1 million bill, said an Aiken County Sheriff's spokesman.

I would have loved to have seen the look on that bank officer's face!

Go Green: Sterilize

Had Toni Vernelli gone ahead with her pregnancy ten years ago, she would know at first hand what it is like to cradle her own baby, to have a pair of innocent eyes gazing up at her with unconditional love, to feel a little hand slipping into hers - and a voice calling her Mummy.

But the very thought makes her shudder with horror.

Because when Toni terminated her pregnancy, she did so in the firm belief she was helping to save the planet.

Scroll down for more...

Desperate measures: Toni Vernelli was steralised at age 27 to reduce her carbon footprint

Incredibly, so determined was she that the terrible "mistake" of pregnancy should never happen again, that she begged the doctor who performed the abortion to sterilise her at the same time.

He refused, but Toni - who works for an environmental charity - "relentlessly hunted down a doctor who would perform the irreversible surgery.

Finally, eight years ago, Toni got her way.

At the age of 27 this young woman at the height of her reproductive years was sterilised to "protect the planet".

Incredibly, instead of mourning the loss of a family that never was, her boyfriend (now husband) presented her with a congratulations card.

While some might think it strange to celebrate the reversal of nature and denial of motherhood, Toni relishes her decision with an almost religious zeal.

"Having children is selfish. It's all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet," says Toni, 35.

"Every person who is born uses more food, more water, more land, more fossil fuels, more trees and produces more rubbish, more pollution, more greenhouse gases, and adds to the problem of over-population."

While most parents view their children as the ultimate miracle of nature, Toni seems to see them as a sinister threat to the future.

It's an extreme stance which one might imagine is born from an unhappy childhood or an upbringing among parents who share similar, strong beliefs.

But nothing in Toni's safe, middle- class upbringing gave any clues as to the views which would shape her adult life. The eldest of three daughters, she enjoyed a loving, close-knit family life.

She excelled at her Roman Catholic school, and her doting parents fully expected her to grow up, settle down and start a family of her own.

"When I finished school, I got a job in retail and at 19, I met my first husband," says Toni.

"No sooner had we finished our wedding cake than all our relatives started to ask when they could expect a new addition to the family.

"I always told them that would never happen, but no one listened.

"When I was a child, I loved bird-watching, and in my teens that developed into a passion for the environment as well as the welfare of animals - I became a vegetarian when I was 15.

"Even my parents used to smile and say: 'You'll change your mind one day about babies.'

"The only person who understood how I felt was my first husband, who didn't want children either.

"We both passionately wanted to save the planet - not produce a new life which would only add to the problem."

So, instead of mapping out plans for a family, Toni and her husband began discussing medical options to ensure they would never reproduce.

Toni, from Taunton, Somerset, says: "When I was 21, I considered sterilisation for the first time.

"I'd been on the Pill for five years and didn't want to take hormone-based contraception indefinitely.

"I went to my GP, but she wouldn't even consider the idea.

"She said I was far too young and told me I could 'absolutely not' be sterilised, and that I was bound to change my mind one day.

"I found her attitude frustrating.

"We decided my husband would have a vasectomy instead. He was 25, just a few years older than me, but the GP allowed him to go ahead.

"I found it insulting that she thought that, just because I was a woman, I'd reach a point where an urge to breed would overcome all rational thought."

Sound like anyone we know? Hmmm...
