Saturday Night at the Drive-In

Saturday was our oldest's birthday. I can't believe she's 11!

Her wish was to go to the drive-in theatre, one of the few remaining, at least around here. We saw Brave (Z has a post about it here) and The Avengers.

The kids had a great time; they even made it until 0230 in the morning!

Here are some pics:

The kids played until the movie started at 2130.

We got a front row spot. The old posts for the speakers are still there, which denote the parking spaces, but to hear the movie you tune in a very small FM radio station on the car or portable radio.

This is Aileen on one of those old speaker posts:

Another shot of the screen. The grey hatch is our newly repaired Scion.

Ok, Ok... I know you're not supposed to take film of the screen once the feature starts, but this is a quick shot of one of the intermission shorts. They still play all of the classic intermission 'Let's all go to the lobby' type shorts, and a countdown. Heck, they even still sell PIC mosquito repellent coils! And they show an ad for it prior to the film!

What's even more awesome, they play the same old-school National Anthem film from the days of the drive in... The same every night for over the decade that I can remember! I can't find the exact one, or I'd link it.

It was really fantastic. Aileen had a great birthday treat, and we all enjoyed ourselves!

A bit pricey, perhaps, but we're definitely going to have to start doing this again more often. It had been nearly eight years since our last visit! Thanks for putting the bug my ear, Mr. AOW!

During intermission, did they have the Father Time cartoon and the narrator says "Just five minutes before showtime"

Keads: Thanks!

Gator: No, they have a couple of sepia-colored clowns on pedestals, like figurines and with a countdown clock. Every minute the clown on the right has a concession treat in his hand, and it changes.

In fact, I found it here!

I was trying to remember who posted that piece about drive-ins. I don't think there's one within 100 miles of here if that close.

Mr. AOW had a nice threat lamenting the death of the drive ins.

Closest one to me is up Maine but it doesn't seem that long ago there were three within a five mile radius of my home.

Odie: That's too bad. It really is a blast!

Ducky: Back when Dave and I were first married and had only a little apartment, I used to live so close to the drive-in that I could tune in the radio and listen to new movies! It kind of felt like old radio programming.

Where I live now is just about 10 minutes away.

Now, about oh, a mile from here is the remains of a old drive-in. Sadly, it was turned into a gravel pit, but the screen remains, slowly decaying. My grandmother said she had many a date there!

Happy birthday to Aileen. She looks way more mature than 11. Her birthday sounded like a blast.

I have great memories of drive in movies myself. My favorites were the dusk to dawn horror fests.

Cube: Thanks! Aileen is pretty mature for her age, too!

Every now and then the drive-in will do a triple feature, which winds up being pretty close to dawn.

Z: I can't believe she's 11! It seems like I brought her home just yesterday!

Thanks! I'll tell her you said so! :)
