Making a model is one thing. Restoring one has to be an order of magnitude harder!
In the Star Trek TOS Season two episode "The Doomsday Machine", the totaled USS Constellation was an AMT model kit bashed up! I would much rather have skilled craftsman and models. The argument can be made that the CGI artists are just as skilled in their craft, but hey, I'm a Luddite!
Cube: Although I've heard that an Alien 'prequel' is coming out next year, it is supposed to have no aliens, ect, but rather be set in that 'universe.'
I'd have to say this is a labor of love.
Keads: Some CGI can be very good, but there's just something about a model that can't be duplicated with a computer, IMO.

Are they reconstructing it for a new movie or just as a labor of love?
This is one of my favorite movies. And it has aged extremely well.

I really love model space ship. I had a bunch of them when I was younger. I have never built one from scratch though.
I was never a big "Alien" fan. Sorry. :(
